Google has picked a good time to upgrade its wireless service. With summer travel season approaching, the company has announced a set of improvements to Google Fi that address coverage, connectivity, and cost three areas that matter most to frequent travelers.
Coverage Now Reaches 110 Countries
The most significant announcement is a coverage expansion to 22 new regions, with Google specifically highlighting Morocco and Colombia among the additions. This brings Google Fi's total coverage to over 110 countries globally. For a carrier that positions itself as a travel-friendly option, reaching this milestone ahead of peak travel season is a well-timed move.
Wi-Fi Auto-Connect+ Gets More Locations
Google Fi's Wi-Fi Auto-Connect+ feature is also expanding. The feature allows Fi subscribers to automatically connect to trusted local Wi-Fi networks while abroad, reducing reliance on mobile data in hotels, airports, and public venues. New locations have been added across Europe and Asia, extending the practical usefulness of the feature for travelers heading to those regions this summer.
Better Pixel Integration
Pixel phone users on Google Fi will benefit from a new automatic network-switching capability. When traveling internationally, the service will now shift between available networks automatically to maintain the best possible connection, without requiring the user to manually manage carrier settings. Google's VPN service, which secures connections over public Wi-Fi, has also been extended to additional countries including Korea and Japan.
Google Fi will also proactively verify that a subscriber's phone is working correctly with the service before they depart for a trip, reducing the risk of landing at a destination only to find coverage is not functioning as expected.
50% Off for New Subscribers
Alongside the service improvements, Google is running a promotion that offers 50% off the Unlimited Premium plan for 12 months. The offer is available to new subscribers and those switching from another carrier. The Unlimited Premium plan includes international calling, international texting, and 50GB of hotspot data.
The discount makes Google Fi notably competitive on price for anyone already considering a switch, particularly heading into a period of heavy travel.
